The Last Delivery
Lucas navigated his delivery scooter through the crowded streets, dodging pedestrians and swerving past cars. He was used to this routine, delivering packages for the private company "Quick Dispatch" for the past year. The company specialized in same-day deliveries, and Lucas was one of their most reliable drivers.
As Lucas approached the pickup address, a feeling of unease washed over him. He pulled up to the imposing gates of the Zure Corporation, his scooter's engine purring as he came to a stop. The guards at the gate eyed him suspiciously, but they let him through after he presented his delivery papers. He couldn't shake off the feeling of unease as he made his way to the delivery bay. The Zure Corporation was known for its cutting-edge technology and its less-than-ethical experimentation. Rumors of the corporation's illegal activities swirled through the city, but Lucas had always brushed them off as just that - rumors.
As he made his way through the sterile white halls, Lucas couldn't help but feel out of place. Everyone here was dressed in expensive suits, carrying sleek briefcases and talking in hushed tones. He was just a delivery driver, in his worn leather jacket and scuffed boots.
Finally, he arrived at the delivery bay where a package was waiting for him. It was small, about the size of a shoebox, and it was wrapped in plain brown paper. He picked it up and examined it, but there were no labels or identifying marks of any kind. Lucas signed for the package and made his way back to his scooter.
It was his last delivery of the day, bound for one of Zure's automated production factories. As he navigated through the crowded streets, a low-flying drone suddenly appeared out of nowhere and flew straight toward him. He swerved to avoid it, but it was too late. He lost control of his scooter and fell to the ground, the package flying through the air. In a moment of panic, he reached out to grab it, but it was too late. The package hit the ground and broke open, revealing its contents.
Lucas couldn't believe his eyes as he saw the contents of the package. Inside were several sheets of paper filled with detailed schematics and blueprints, and a device he couldn't quite recognize. His eyes were drawn to a technical drawing titled "Explosive Device Sharper XI". Lucas had never heard of such a thing, but the name alone set off alarm bells in his head. The device was small, but it was clear that it had the power to cause devastating destruction. And it was headed for mass production.
He quickly gathered himself and made his way back to his scooter. His mind was racing with thoughts about the bomb and what to do with it. He knew that if he delivered the package, it would likely be used in one of Zure’s countless mineral wars. But if he didn't deliver it, he could be putting his own life and the lives of others in danger.
He thought about the consequences of not delivering the package. He could lose his job, be arrested, and even face prison time. He could even be killed. On the other hand, if he delivered the package, he feared it could cause suffering for innocent people. He felt a sense of responsibility to stop the bomb from being used.
He considered his options. He could go to the authorities and report what he had found, but he knew that would just lead to him being arrested and the bomb being returned to Zure. They owned the police. He could also try to destroy the bomb himself, but he knew that would be incredibly dangerous. Besides he didn’t know enough about bombs or engineering.
As he thought about the risks involved, he realized that the only option that made sense was to take the bomb to his friend Evelyn. She was a computer engineer, who specialized in AI technology. She was working for a toy repair shop, developing new AI chips that could be integrated into various devices. Lucas and Evelyn had known each other for a long time, they had worked together in a ramen cafe in the past and had been friends ever since. They had always been interested in technology and had a shared passion for using it to make life more bearable. Lucas knew that if anyone could help him figure out what to do with the bomb, it would be Evelyn.
He made a decision, making a detour to Evelyn's workplace, a small AI toy repair shop in the outskirts of the city.
As he entered the shop, he was greeted by the sound of whirring gears and the smell of soldering. He saw Evelyn, dressed in a smock, working on a small robot toy. She looked up from her work and smiled.
"Lucas! It's been a while, what brings you here?" she asked.
Lucas hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to begin. He took a deep breath and told her about the package he had been delivering, and the bomb he had found inside.
Evelyn's expression changed from surprise to concern as he spoke. She listened attentively, and when he was finished, she said, "This is serious, Lucas. We need to act fast before it falls into the wrong hands."
Without hesitation, she put down her tools and gestured for Lucas to follow her to a private room. They sat down at a small table, and Lucas spread out the schematics of the bomb on the table. Evelyn studied them closely, her eyes scanning over the intricate designs and technical specifications.
“Damn, this is a sophisticated piece of technology," she said. "It's going to take a lot of work to disable it, but I think I can do it."
Lucas watched as Evelyn began to tinker with the bomb. She pulled out a small AI chip from a toy frog she found lying around. "This chip could be the key," she said. “I might not be able to defuse it, but if I can integrate this chip with the bomb's existing systems, I might be able to reprogram it."
They worked together for hours, discussing different approaches and methods. Finally, Evelyn dropped her tools and looked up at Lucas with a smirk on her face, “I think we did it" she said. The bomb was now reprogrammed to detonate after delivery.
Lucas’s heart was pounding with anxiety when he arrived at Zure's automated production factory. This time he was not just a delivery driver, he was on a mission to stop the corporation from using the weapon. He knew that what he was about to do was incredibly risky, and he couldn't shake off the feeling that something might go wrong.
He pulled up to the entrance, where he was greeted by a guard robot who asked for his papers. Lucas handed them over, trying to keep his hands steady as the robotic guard scanned the delivery papers and scanned his face for identification. He felt like he was under a microscope, and he couldn't help but feel like the guard robot knew something was off.
“What are the contents of the package?” the guard asked, scanning the package Lucas was holding.
“I don’t know, it’s from the headquarters,” Lucas replied, trying to sound as casual as possible.
"Delivery for Zure’s automated production factory #27. Authorization accepted," the robot stated in a monotone voice.
Lucas breathed a sigh of relief as he was allowed to enter. But his relief was short-lived, as he was greeted with a series of security measures that seemed to take an agonizingly long time. He had to go through a metal detector, have his fingerprints scanned, and submit to tera scanning. All the while, he was aware that the bomb was active, and he couldn't help but feel like time was running out.
Finally, he was allowed to proceed after what felt like an eternity. As he made his way through the lobby, he couldn't help but notice the eerie silence that hung in the air. The only movement came from the drones that hovered in the corners of the room, scanning and monitoring the area. The automated factory was a stark contrast to some of the lively research labs he had visited in the past.
He walked up to the delivery desk, where another robot guard waited. Its red eyes glared at him as it scanned him with a beam of light. "Delivery for bay 23," Lucas said, holding out the package.
"Scanning," the robot guard said in a mechanical voice, as it scanned the package. "Approved.”
Lucas looked past the robot guard and into the factory, where he saw rows of machines and robots working on various tasks. The machines hummed and whirred as they assembled deadly weapons, with no human supervision.
Lucas left the package with the robot and headed back to his scooter, feeling a sense of relief as he got back on the road.
As Lucas drove back to his workplace, his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. He couldn't shake off the feeling of anxiety and fear. He knew that what he had done was incredibly risky and that he could have been caught at any moment.
He also thought about Evelyn, how she had been able to reprogram the bomb, and how her expertise had been instrumental in saving countless lives.
As he pulled into the parking lot of Quick Dispatch, he felt a sense of pride, knowing that he had been able to make a difference in the world and that he had the power to make a change.
"Where have you been?” his boss scowled behind his desk. “That package was supposed to be delivered hours ago."
Lucas felt a lump form in his throat as he explained that he had been held up by security measures at Zure’s factory. He knew that he was walking on thin ice and that his boss would not be pleased.
But before he could even finish his explanation, his boss's expression changed from anger to shock. "You didn't hear?" he asked. "There was an explosion at Zure’s automated production factory just a few hours ago. Lucky for you, you weren't there at the time."
Lucas felt a sense of relief wash over him, as he realized that the bomb had detonated just as they had planned.
His boss, however, was less sympathetic. "You're lucky to be alive, but that doesn't excuse the fact that you delivered that package late. I'll have to deduct 200 credits from your paycheck this week."
He shrugged it off and replied with a smirk, "I guess my paycheck is the real victim here.”
Lucas was about to leave the office when his boss called out to him, "Oh, by the way, there's someone here to see you." He gestured to a door on the side of the room. Lucas's heart skipped a beat, fearing that the visitor could be someone from Zure here to confront him about the explosion.
He approached the door hesitantly, and as he opened it, he saw a man sitting inside, dressed in black with a menacing look on his face. Lucas felt a wave of fear wash over him, thinking that Zure had already put a hit on him.
"Lucas, my name is Mason. I am part of an underground resistance against Zure. We have been looking for someone like you.”
